Near Anza-Borrego State Park, California. 2017
My mom and I drove out early in the morning to get to Anza-Borrego State Park before the crowds. Instagram was full of pictures of the superbloom, and we’d heard stories of spending hours in line to enter the park.
Things weren’t so dire on a weekday. We parked in the visitors’ center and spent an hour or two wandering around the gardens there before setting out to explore the surrounding area.
This guy was one of many metal sculptures in Borrego Springs, the town where the visitor center is located. The dinosaurs in particular are pretty spectacular and they fit right in: Anza-Borrego is one of those places where it feels like you could blink and end up in prehistoric times, facing the real thing.
